LANXESS Emulsion Rubber is located about fifteen kilometres from Strasbourg, near La Wantzenau.
Built in 1962 by the Canadian group Polymer Corporation, the purpose of this premier production unit was, on the one hand, to produce SBR, the first general-purpose synthetic rubber, which was invented in the 1930s as a technical and economic rival to natural rubber, and, on the other hand, to produce specialty NBR. Since then, La Wantzenau has continued to develop new activities.
Meanwhile, it has become the global headquarters of the Nitrile-Butadiene-Rubber (NBR) business line, within the Technical Rubber Products (TRP) business unit. The oil-resistant NBR rubbers are marketed under the brand of
Baymod® N
These rubbers are used in the manufacture of cables, seals, hoses, platens, brake pads and indeed safety shoes.
The site is also home to the global NBR Research & Development Centre that enables researchers to develop products geared towards customer requirements and to improve production processes as well as marketing strategies. With its strong workforce of 300 employees, of which 2/3 are shift workers, La Wantzenau factory supplies its products to 600 customers in 70 different countries.
